I saw a watch ad in a golf magazine featuring Phil Mickelson, and it said that he once skipped a ball off of a lake on to the green and made an eagle. Anyone know when and where he did that? I can't imagine he meant to do it, since that seems like a rather large risk.
he did do it when he was in q school. it really happened. Not in tournament play though. In his practice round.
Phil Mickelson explains techniques to chip from the rough. From Phil's "Secrets of the short game" dvd. I recommend purchasing the ...
Why do so many people hate Phil? I have met him in person and he is a great guy. The media is always trying to make him look like a phony, and he isn't , he just a little annoying or so I hear.
I didn't he is annoying, that is what his fellow tour pros have said. And this dude is my hero, but everyone I know hates him, plus I read an article about him being phony. I no he is not, I have met him in person, he let me take a picture with him and he gave me a golf ball he used during a tourny.
I meant to say, I didnt say he was annoying
Phil reminds me of the Williams sisters sometimes. He just has other interests than golf. His family is very important to him, and golf is not his top priority.
The media and many fans of his fans really want him to challenge Tiger Woods...they want him to be a challenging number two...and maybe Phil just gives the impression that he doesn't care, which can annoy people.
It's very hard today to be a sports professional, because it seems like image...and not substance....is everything.
If Phil Mickelson wins the next 3 majors in a row, could he be considered the 3rd best golfer of all time behind #1 Tiger, #2 Nicholas...along side with Palmer and Nelson, then #3 Phil Mickelson?
Keep in mind that he would have won more, but he's playing against Tiger.
Mickelson isn't even the third best player right now, much less of all time. Too inconsistent, too bullheaded. He has won two majors and given away several others. Look at the records of people like Tom Watson, Nelson, Hogan, Palmer, Player, Ballesteros, Faldo, Snead... Mickelson would have to win six or more majors to even get into the same conversation as those guys.
Tiger isn't the reason Phil hasn't won more big tournaments; Mickelson is. He makes stupid decisions, goes for broke when it isn't necessary, tries to pull off the heroic shot when just hitting the fairway would win the tournament (U.S. Open). The biggest difference between Phil and Tiger isn't ability, it's poise and brains. Tiger NEVER beats himself. Phil does it every week.
With Sergio replacing him as 2nd best golfer, just thinking that he's been at number 2 for a long time!
how long has it been that no1 = TW , and no2 = Phil?!
Phil has had several stints at #2.
He first attained that level way back in 2000, when he won four TOUR events, including the season-ending TOUR Championship.
He held the #2 spot for most of the next two years (2001-2002) before giving it up to Vijay Singh.
Remember, Phil had a very disappointing 2003, when he went winless and finished 38th on the TOUR's money list.
But 2004 was a big year for The Mick, as he won his first major (The Masters) and finished 3rd on the money list. But Vijay had a huge '04 and became the world's #1, in front of Tiger.
Phil stayed #3 for all of '04 and '05, even though he won his second major in August 2005, the PGA Championship at Baltusrol.
When Phil won his third major, his second Masters, in April 2006, he regained the #2 spot in the OWGR. But he would lose that spot midway throug the year, right after his Winged Foot fiasco. Jim Furyk assumed the #2 spot and held it the rest of 2006.
Phil would not regain his #2 spot until May 2007, after winning THE PLAYERS Championship. He has held it since then, until this current ranking.

They have an archive section where you may look back to every week of the ranking since it was established in April, 1986.
At golf tournaments, etc. I've heard he's not real cordial, but was just wondering. Phil is my favorite golfer simply because he golfs left-handed like me.
I heard Mark Allan talking on SEN radio about Phil playing a practice round at Augusta a couple of weeks before the Masters. Apparently he was paired with a couple of members who normally put a small wager on each hole...Phil agreed to also join the skins game but suggested they 'up the wager just to make it more interesting'. He was off scratch and they had their handicaps.
By the end of the round Phil owed the two guys quite a lot of money but took off without paying! Apparently a few days later he received a call from the President of Augusta National saying that if he didn't pay the guys then he wouldn't be welcome at the upcoming Masters - he paid up!
I have heard that he is very polite when the cameras are around but a lot of other tour golfers say he's very arrogant around the clubhouse etc. Paul Gow has come out publicly and said this several times.
I heard that Phil bet some amateurs $100,000 versus their $5,000 during the run up to the 2008 Masters. The story goes that after losing, Phil then tried to renege on the bet. The matter was taken to the head of the Augusta National Club who threatened to keep Phil out of next year's tournament if he didn't pay up.
